Medicare

Medicare is a federal insurance program for peopl aged 65 and over and those with certain severe disabilities.  If after being discharged from a minimum three-day hospital stay, the person is admitted to a Skilled Nursing Facility within 30 days, Medicare may help cover up to 100 days of care in a benefit period, as long as the resident continues to meet the skilled level of care criteria.

If eligible, Medicare Part A pays the full cost of covered services for the first 20 days.  From the 21st day to the 100th day there is a Medicare coinsurance. Many supplemental insurances will cover the Medicare coinsurance amounts. If the resident does not have a supplemental or the supplemental does not cover the Medicare coinsurance the resident will be responsible for paying.
